Deconstructing the Role of the MOZ/KAT6A Double Winged Helix Domain in Gene 
Regulation and Disease

A PhD project (MRC Impact funded) is available in the Gene Regulation & RNA 
Biology Laboratory, University of Nottingham 
under the supervision of Professor David M Heery. 
The project will involve a structure/ function characterisation of a novel 
domain within the gene regulatory protein KAT6A/ MOZ. 
Mutations in this gene are associated with childhood leukemias and 
neurodevelopmental syndromes. KAT6A/ MOZ has multiple functions, 
one of which is an epigenetic regulator controlling histone acetylation. Our 
long-term aim is to understand the role of a 
double winged helix domain in the pathology of these conditions. The project 
will provide the opportunity to learn a range of molecular and 
cell biology techniques including protein purification/ crystallisation, DNA 
binding assays, site-directed mutagenesis and CRISPR CAS9 editing. 
The project involves a collaboration with Dr Ingrid Dreveny (Structural 
Biology) and Dr Ralf Flaig at Diamond Light Source/ Research Complex Harwell.
