Dear colleagues,
We are recruiting a postdoc on protein modeling and design direction,
and if you *apply by this weekend*, we may have time to prepare an
application for the Rice University Academy of Fellows, which will boost
your stipend to 60,000 per year. See below for details:
################
The Lab for Synthetic Macromolecular Assemblies <http://lulab.rice.edu/>
(PI: George J. Lu) at Rice Bioengineering is recruiting a postdoc fellow
with expertise on *protein structure modeling and bioinformatics*. Wet
lab experience in molecular biology and biochemistry will be a bonus.
The recruited postdoc will lead projects in designing and evolving novel
genetic variants of protein nanostructures, and *have opportunities to
learn a multidisciplinary skillset *including synthetic biology,
directed evolution and small-animal imaging.
The research in the lab focuses on a class of gas-filled protein
nanostructures named gas vesicles, and use them to develop novel imaging
and cellular control technologies for basic research, cell-based
therapies, and biomaterials. Gas vesicles were recently shown to enable
ultrasound- and MRI-based imaging of gene expressions in therapeutic
microbes and mammalian cells Nature Materials 2018

<http://doi.org/10.1126/science.aax4804>), and have potential
applications in remote cellular control and biomaterials.
Dr. Lu was previously awarded the Young Investigator of the Year from
the World Molecular Imaging Society for his work on the development of
acoustically erasable MRI reporter genes. The independent lab was newly
established in 2020 with support from the *NIH Pathway-to-independence*
(K99/R00) and the *Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas
(CPRIT) *Scholar awards.
*Rice Bioengineering* is one of the top biomedical engineering
departments with its graduate program consistently *ranked among the top
10 in the country*. The Texas Medical Center across the street is the
largest medical center in the continent with multiple leading medical
institutes such as MD Anderson, Baylor College of Medicine and UT
Health. The candidate will have opportunities to lead cutting-edge
research projects and interact with outstanding scientists as
collaborators and trainees. The candidate should have strong written and
oral communication skills, and will also be expected to aid in the
supervision of junior lab members and the preparation of research proposals.
The pay scale for the position follows the university guidelines. Please
note if *applied and interviewed before Feb.1*, the selected candidate
will be eligible to apply to Rice University Academy of Fellows
<https://riceacademy.rice.edu/>, which will *boost the stipend to 60,000
per year*.
