My mistake, that was on my Fedora 40 host, not my Alma 9 host. Installing
libxcrypt-compat fixed the problem.

I recently updated from Scientific Linux 7 to Alma 9. I don't know if this is
part of the reason or not.
I have version 8.0.017.
