Dear Crystallography Community,
I have been asked to give a short talk about Max Perutz's contribution to the
Festival of Britain on its 75th anniversary - it's a day event celebrating the
roles of immigrants in the festival (especially when so many, including Max,
had been interned as 'enemy aliens' just a decade earlier) and can be attended
in person or online:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-tonic-to-the-nation-immigrant-contribution-to-the-festival-of-britain-tickets-1989221561238
I was able to find a lot of beautiful photos of the design outputs from the
Festival Pattern Group in the lovely book 'From Atoms to Patterns' by Lesley
Jackson, but I couldn't find any images of the science display he created as
per this joyful quote from a letter to his sister Lotte (mentioned in Georgina
Ferry's fabulous biography), '...I have been asked to present the 'Problem of
Life' in its physical and chemical aspects... Isn't this a wonderful
opportunity for applying one's creative imagination? It's a nice subject to
think about night and day.'
If anyone has any further intel on the science side of the exhibition or any
photos of Max they are willing to share, please message me individually.
With great appreciation and all best wishes,
Rivka
