I have successfully  built 1.6 and 1.7 branches in Visual Studio
2008...so it can be done

What sort of errors are you encountering?  A big problem I had was
that some preprocessor symbols were not being defined properly. For
example, the windows version flag which determines if IPv6 support is
included was a big problem for me...
