You just made me think that I need to go check on some of my stuff and see what 
the batteries are doing… Been quite a while since I used a lot of them.

On an old Mac, quite often the reason for a machine to not boot at all would be 
a dead PRAM battery, so complete removal may not be an option. You could test 
it, but don’t expect much. As for what is stored in there besides date/time, a 
quick search shows that it is likely storing data on startup disk ID, AppleTalk 
status, monitor settings, volume, mouse speed, and energy saver settings.
