Maybe someone has replaced the original lock assembly for a non-standard
attachment cable?

A while ago I got an attachment cable which had the lock assembly damaged
and I was rather pleased to find out that the necessary parts are readily
available, brand new, in retail quantities, e.g. Farnell has them. So if
you'd like to restore the connector to its original arrangement, then it
should be straightforward.
