I suspect the differences between the tar on OSX and SysV R2 are between non-trivial and significant.
There /may/ be some command line options that you can add to tar on OSX to make something that SysV R2 will read.
Maybe someone else here knows the answer. If not, I'd re-ask your question on the TUHS mailing list where there are more people who will probably know the command options nearly off the tip of their fingers.
