"bought by Christies" might mean that individual employees, or corporate, might offer a paid "proxy bidding" service?

Unless there was specific mandate not to do so, I can imagine either a potential buyer or an employee initiating a "I'll give you 15% over what you pay, up to $100K, if you get it for me."
