But how can anyone home and feed a 370/168?

168?  No WAY!  Massive weight, water cooling and massive power consumption.  But, a friend of mine had a 370/145 in a bedroom of his house.  We were trying to power it up with the standard motor/generator set.  but, to reduce the parts they had to stock, I suspect IBM used a one size fits all scheme.  The motor was a 20 HP monster, but the 145 CPU only used about 1600 W DC.  Vast overkill, and the reactive power that motor drew exceeded anything we could supply.  We did get it to spin, but had to have a guy hold the handle on the breaker!

If it had become available I'd have taken the 360/50 at UMR or either of the 43xx machines.  I owned a 4381 for a time.  At a friend's site in O'Fallon we brought up a 4341 on VM/SP5 for him to test peripherals.  The deep freeze machines were excellent with the 4361 being at the top of  the heap.  All had comm controllers for console and 3 extra terminals, and the 4361 had a storage director. Only needed to add a 3375 plus some sort of channel attached tape to be running a big PC.

He serviced the IBM check sorters, one of two who did at the time.
thanks
Jim
