Ok, this NOT work with Xvnc (yes, I know how to set that up with CDE - an
appropriate line in /etc/dt/config/Xservers). It would return back to the
login prompt not long after logging in; presumably there’s a server reset or
something that it didn’t deal gracefully with. Maybe that can be turned off?
Don’t know. I think there’s at least something that reduces a server grab to a
keyboard grab while typing the password, which allows one to do some creative
things like run a program with a shutdown button on top of the dtlogin screen.
(I had one of those once, don’t think I have it anymore.)
So this was the excuse to run the powered USB extension cables and the long
video cable (since I have an XVR-300 video card in my T5240). And, after
stopping gdm, setting the eeprom to use the keyboard/monitor instead of the
virtual-console, rebooting, logging in, and manually running
/usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -daemon…IT WORKS IT WORKS! Haven’t tried everything yet,
but the desktop looks right, although of course the control panel is a bit more
bare compared to the Sun one.
I wonder if there are some mods for dropping out to a text console session, as
one can using Sun’s version. And of course sdtwinlst is missing, as is the
graphical one (sdtgwm?) probably inspired by TriTeal’s version. But it’s
progress, and it shows that getting it running on SPARC and Solaris 11.2 is
quite doable.
