/etc/dt and /var/dt are never installed (as part of the "CDE" package).
/etc/dt/ and /var/dt/ are setup as part of the 4 postinstall scripts.
So, maybe we do need to spend some time on those to make sure they honor
a destdir as well...
I also appear to have messed up cde-next-2 (didn't rebase properly), so
I will delete it and create a install-destdir branch based off of
current master and with my two installCDE patches, and we can get it
working for you there before merging them into master.

No, this should be ok. I've applied it to master.
We should hold off on any more of the massive patches removing old
support though, at least until Ulrich's testing is done and we can get a
release out the door.
Have you tried my cde-next-2 fix to installCDE with the -destdir option
yet? I'd like to get that in master ASAP too.
