Hi everybody,
I’ve been mostly away from CDE for a while. Working as a database
admin for the company that’s responsible for distributing the Covid
vaccines in Germany did leave little room for anything else.
Ha, similar story here - though I've mainly been working on devices that
test for Covid, among other virii.
Having a couple weeks off for the first time since August 2020, so I
decided to sit in front of a computer some more. And I come with good
news: we can add a new platform to our building pages. Using WSL2 and
xrdp CDE runs perfectly fine on Windows 10. I’ll post the building
instructions in the Wiki tomorrow.
I saw that... Looks nice :)
Speaking of which. The Wiki is in bad need of a major overhaul. We
have separate building pages for the BSD’s despite the fact that they
are almost identical, and several Linux building pages. Others on the
other hand are buried with no main menu entry and we have few pages
past the building process. So I thought I’d do some major work on it.
Is there anyone who would object to that?
I do not object - getting people who will help maintain it seems to be a
tall ask. I agree that the BSD pages could be consolidated somewhat.
Linux does have various differences in building and package dependencies
however, so not sure how much consolidation can be done there. Others,
like Solaris - I have no idea if any recent version of CDE even runs on
Solaris anymore.
Second: I’ve written a little tool that detects other window managers,
like window maker, icewm and desktop environments, like xfce and mate
and installs them as additional sessions in dtlogin. Who are the
comitters I can send it to for evaluation?
I guess you could post that to the list as a patch that places it in
contrib somewhere along with a README.md on what it is and how to use it?
Third: Is there any work being done on the dtinfo and documentation
issue and is there a rough release plan? I’m asking because I’m
considering to apply for official BSD port status for CDE, so it’ll be
buildable for users within their usual package manager. If I can lend
a hand, feel free to ask
Interestingly, I too have some time on my hands, and will have some more
toward the end of the year. I started looking at documentation (help)
yesterday as a matter of fact, so that is in progress. Fortunately all
of the needed components are available now and I am hoping it will not
be too painful.
As for dtinfo, I don't know. Chase was working on that, but then I
think he gave up. So I do not know what it's status is currently, or
what is broken. Feel free to investigate if you would like.
Fourth: I’ve run the current version through nearly all systems we
have in the Wiki and they all build properly. The raspberry pie page
needs to be brought up to date, which I’ll do in the coming date.
Great. I setup a Jenkins instance on my build server that I run
incoming patches through - I think this has helped a lot. I only test a
few systems currently though:
Ubuntu: 18.04, 20.04, latest (currently 20.10)
Rocky: CentOS 8 replacement
FreeBSD: 12
All are AMD64 systems (both on HW and VMs)
I may add others in the future, but hopefully we can reduce the number
of times a patch for one platform breaks some other platform, which was
becoming a real problem.

That’s enough questions for the start.
Cheers, Danilo
