NetBSD and OpenBSD have this function in their libc, FreeBSD and opensolaris 
have this function in a bundled libmd with the system. Linux is the only system 
it doesn't come with and it can be installed on most systems as libmd or libbsd 
(this one is deprecated). It's not a very painful band-aid to rip off.
