I've merged this, but I changed the configure.ac stuff - we were already
checking for libm, so I removed your duplicate.
I also moved the dl check to be after the libm check (to preserve lib
ordering), and made it non-fatal if it wasn't found -- maybe on some
systems it isn't needed...
