Hi Gary,
Sorry no one got back to you. Messages to this list are received by the
project leads, community volunteers and other distributors. If someone
just hit *Reply*, and you aren't subscribed to the list, then you
wouldn't get the message. Alternatively 'everyone' may have thought
that 'someone' would do it!
Please find below numbered instructions for becoming a CD-Rom
distributor yourself, along with reminders and suggestions for how to
get started:
1) Create a Username and Password on www.openoffice.org
<http://www.openoffice.org/>
- click the register link at the top right of the page.
*Mailing Lists*
2) Go to http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/distributors.html
Assuming you've already read this page (take the time to do so now if
you haven't) scroll down to 'Mailing Lists'.
3) Click on Project Mailing Lists
<http://distribution.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList>
Subscribe to:

[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>
You'll receive automated confirmation of your subscription (if not, let
us know). Following this you'll receive all emails sent to these lists.
*Community Distributors*
*NB. OpenOffice.org does not produce or send the CDs for you to distribute.*
If you have the means, you may produce CDs and/or other marketing
material to distribute, or you might choose to buy and resell discs from
another distributor if this is easier or more cost effective for you.
The license under which OOo is released allows you to legally give away
or sell discs for any amount you choose. (See
http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/mostfaqs.html#3)
Once you are distributing CDs you can apply to be listed as a
distributor on this page: http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/
It may take some time for your listing to appear because
1.
the list is updated by volunteers, and
2.
each website needs to be checked for validity.
As a 'Community Distributor' you can affect the reputation of the
software and the project so please keep this in mind when communicating
with users and with producing CDs and packaging/documentation.
Disc templates, logos, artwork etc. are available on www.openoffice.org
<http://www.openoffice.org/> through the Marketing project
(http://marketing.openoffice.org/).
*4) Get the Software*
It is important to make sure that you are always distributing the latest
stable version.
There are at least 2 different methods of producing discs:
i) At http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/iso_downoad.html
(sic) you will find disc images which you can download and then burn
to disc. This image is prepared by the project co-lead and contains
installers for various platforms and other 'Extras'. Immediately
after the release of a new version of OOo, it may take a few days or
weeks before this is updated.
ii) Download the latest version from
http://download.openoffice.org/. Optionally extract the files, then
burn to disc.
Notice that, depending on your language, there's usually a version with
Java, and a version without. There are advantages and disadvantages for
both, but bear in mind that people who receive your CDs to will probably
need Java to use all the features of OOo.
*eBay*
If you want to sell your CDs on eBay there are conditions for doing this
which you can read at: http://distribution.openoffice.org/ebay_page.html
Although some eBay traders do sell OpenOffice.org on there, many traders
have had listings cancelled at some point. This happens when eBay's
policies---designed to protect against piracy---are incorrectly applied
to listings of CDs containing OpenOffice.org, so be prepared for this.
*Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)*
If you are building systems and would like to pre-install OOo on the
computers you sell, much of the above still applies. Please see:
http://distribution.openoffice.org/oem/ for additional requirements, and
the OEM Mailing List.
If you have any questions, please reply to this email and I, or one of
the other volunteers subscribed to the list will respond.
Regards,
James

Subject: OPenOffice.org CD Distribution and Use of Logos
Dear Sirs,
I am writing to introduce myself as an individual who wishes to become a CD Community Distribute for OpenOffice.org. My name is Gary Hallberg and I am starting up as a part time sole trader under the name of "North Border Software". My full contact details are below. I wish to sell CD's of OpenOffice at a nominal cost for the media and postage and I propose to donate 10% of the margin on each sale (approximately 0.10GBP) to OpenOffice.org as monetary contribution. I also propose to donate about 5% of the margin on all ebay sales to designated charities.
I have registered the domain names "northborder-software.co.uk (& .com) for a
future internet presence. However, initial sales will be via ebay until there is such
demand to merit the cost of Web hosting.
I am employed full time as I anticipate this to be very much a part time and
venture with little personal financial gain. As a user of OpenOffice I believe
very much in the concept and I am very impressed with the product.
I am also writing to ask permission to use the logos and banners on my Web
presence and my distribution CD's.
I have read an understood the Information for Distributes page on your
Website and I will subscribe to the relevent mailing lists.
Best Wishes,
Gary Hallberg
