I am involved in volunteering at a non-profit animal shelter. I'm looking at
writing some databases and other stuff that will be used by the animal shelter.
Free is good, and the tons of support by the users and developers of Open
Office are a great benefit.

I was wondering if I developed something if I could ask for a donation to the
shelter I work at (example might be a little database app to track a dog or
cat's vet visits (only example I can think of right off the top of my head)). I
don't want to be stepping on the concept of the open software license.

I don't personally want a penny from the projects. Like I said it would be for
the benefit of a registered not for profit organization. Also it would help
promote Open Office.....Or could there be a work around for the charging money
for an Open Office Application? Trade a bag of Dog Chow for an app?

Hi Joe,

As far as I know there is nothing in the licensing that prevents you "selling" OOo to cover cost and make a profit. If you develop a database using OOo you can do as you wish with it. If your new to database development I would suggest getting a copy of the file at http://documentation.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=778&expandFolder=778&folderID=778 . The first two parts cover how relational databases work and to design them. The third part covers using SQL commands in Base to create the database. I think the samples used would fit in to your case real good.

All this being said this mail list is not the best place for this, the users mailing list would have been better, as this list is for those who wish to distribute OOo on disk.
