They are definitely out of red book specs. However I could play one
on a 1984 Philips CD-150 audio player.

I would guess that more CD-ROM drives than audio players would
have problems. At least all CD-players that play the "copy protected"
BMG HIM Raizorblade CD should play them if the track following
system is of good enough quality.
