I see no reason for dump anymore. Dump depends on the FS so it is not portable.

The problems backuing up file hidden by mount operations, that tar has 
may be solved by some new options to the loopback FS and if the 
GET ALLOC info ioctl will work again, star is even faster with dumping
sparse files than dump. ... and id reproduces holes correctly.
