cdrecord timeout error

Hi,

A number of times my SCSI bus hangs when I issue
a recording command via cdrecord (linux 2.2.16-3 Red Hat 6.2). 
The error messages report "bad target : device not responding" and the
command is aborted due to time out. Could this unwanted
feature be softened by changing the sg driver complie option
SG_DEFAULT_RETRIES (=1 as a default)?
