  Yes, I assumed you meant "faster than 4x" but I didn't get to your
first post in time. The answer is that cdrecord is determining the max
speed for the media type and limiting you to that. In general that's a
good thing, a feature to prevent coasters if you try to run at the max
speed of your burner.

  This one is not a bug, it's a feature.
