Dear All,
I need to buy a new CDR+CDRW writer. Could anybody recommend a
reasonably priced, reliable device? I have access to an ADAPTEC
AHA-2940W/2940UW SCSI card and would be quite happy to go for a SCSI rather
than IDE one, if preferable. The target machine is a P133 PC.

Currently I'm using a HP7100i IDE device, which has been a lot of trouble. Its
small buffer sometimes leads to buffer underruns when the machine is slow (ie.
running Windows98!) or when burning a remote mounted CD image. Despite often
using a cleaning CD on it and after eventually taking the thing apart and
'manually' cleaning it, it continues to be unreliable. Failure at the fixation
stage is common. More insidiously, I know from examining syslog on my Linux
machine that CDRs which wrote OK (with both cdrecord & commercial Win9x S/W) do
generate recoverable errors when read. I imagine Win9x users would have no
inkling that their CDs were dodgy!

Anyway, I definitely, don't want another one of those HPs!

Thanks.
Tom.
