cdrecord log files

Hi,

With cdrecord and mkisofs, the -v flag prints output to the screen.
Has anyone modified these progs to write various things to a log
file? The reason I ask is that I would like to have a perl/tk
GUI which has a scroll bar that update as both cdrecord and
mkisofs "print out" the status of the write process (in %).
