but as I said -- in my case it's hdc on it's own channel. The fixed optical
is a DVD.

There would *maybe* the option to "have a look inside" and find out if
the fixed can't be attached to the second channel. If you dig deep on Dells
supprot pages (maybe dell.com and not .de) you will be able to find a pdf on
how to disassemble/reassemble an Inspiron (8k). Maybe that can allready tell
you if it's worth even touching one of the screws.
