Well, this is a result of a bug in the Linux kernel and using an 
outdated version of cdrecord. The Linux kernel is the source of 
the bad return data. Newer libscg versions (as used in newer cdrecord 
versions) know about this bug and will print a timeout message instead.

If you like old versions of cdrecord to print useful things, you need
to fix the corresponding bug in the Linux kernel...
I believe the bug is located in ide-scsi.c

It may either be a result of not working DMA or the result of a second
and unfriendly application working on the drive while cdrecord 
tries to write.
