Some notes on USB burners and Linux:

1. On two machines, I was able to use two different USB burners by using a
USB card. The machines have USB, but Linux has problems with them. With the
external card (one PCMCIA, one PCI) the problems disappeared. The cards are
from Buslink and are USB 2.0. I haven't been able to test other cards yet.
The laptop machine that works with the PCMCIA card is a Sony which has very
poor built in USB support; strange behavior on a Sony never surprises me.
The PCI card fixed problems on machines I usually don't have a problem with.

2. For reasons that I am still investigating, the USB problems have gotten
worse with newer versions of the kernel. When I know more about this with
respect to CD burners, I'll post more information to the list.

3. As Joerg indicated, this is a general USB problem and specific to neither
cdrecord nor CD burners. I believe that there are both general USB problems
and problems related to USB mass storage. The same problems (or worse
problems) occur with USB CF reader/writers, and other mass storage devices.
