I have a TDK VeloCD 24x12x32 burner. I have no problem burning data cds at 24x while doing anything on my computer, but when I try to burn audio cd's, it fails after writing about 5 megs of the 1st track. My computer is a 1.2 athlon with 1gig of ram on a iwill motherborad running gentoo-1.4. I've had this same problem on multiple distributions running multiple kernels and multiple versions of cdrecrd. I can send some debug output if needed.
