Hello,
I just bought my first DVD drive for my linux box (Athlon)
debian sarge plus some sid pieces...

The drive is
IISONIC8404A and looks similar to MSI8404A dual format
and is reportedly similar to other drives sold (opterite, accestek)..

dvd+rw-format seems OK
I mastered a nealy 4GB archive with xcdroast/mkisofs
When I try to burn it with growisofs, I get the following message
(after pages of progress information)
.....
4007231488/4129945600 (97.0%) @0.0x, remaining 0:36
:-[ LBA=401ddb30h, SENSE KEY=2h/ASC=04h/ASCQ=07h ]
:-( write failed: No medium found
/dev/scd1: flushing cache
:-( unable to FLUSH CACHE: No medium found

This message is with the last sid release of dvd+rw-tools, le previous one
gave only ./flushing cache.

The program hangs and I have to kill -9

after the crash, if I try some commands, I get
bash-2.05b$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/scd1
INQUIRY: [ATAPI ][DVD RW 4XMax ][2.07]
- [unable to MODE SENSE(20407)]: bash-2.05b$
bash-2.05b$
bash-2.05b$ growisofs -Z /dev/scd1=/home/cdr/track-01.img
:-[ Unit won't start: 20407 ]
:-( unable to READ FORMAT CAPACITIES: No medium found

Is the drive defective or is it a software problem ?
Any help is welcome

D.

PS since I suspected a media proble, I also tried to write on the supplied
DVD+R disk, without success. I can burn CD/RW and CD/R
