It seems that there is no DVD burner which will cope will all media. The Sony 500 will not write the media which cdrecord-prodvd labels as 'VIVASTAR', not even with the latest firmware. If it doesn't work with the media listed by Sony as supported, your hardware is most likely dodgy.
