??? "Virgin" is not a brand, but media state. Media of any brand comes out of the factory "virgin." However! Quoting the page "as of version 5.10 growisofs detects blanks and applies initial formatting procedure automatically." Do you imply that you have growisofs 5.10 or later and it failed to recognize blank media and apply initial pre-format procedure?
