Do you mean it *completes* recordings most of the time and sometimes fails to complete one? All this is it with same media brand?
Yes, I am testing making backups continuously to the same dvd. And most of the times it completes recordings well:
--- ... 99.53% done, estimate finish Mon Feb 2 03:52:14 2004 Total extents actually written = 633014 Total translation table size: 0 Total rockridge attributes bytes: 2980 Total directory bytes: 0 Path table size(bytes): 10 Max brk space used 7000 633014 extents written (1236 Mb) /dev/scd0: flushing cache /dev/scd0: writing lead-out /dev/scd0: reloading tray ---
But sometimes it goes wrong.

Utterly strange, sounds more like deficient hardware... If upgrading firmware doesn't help, I'd suggest to try to replace the unit...
It is a brandnew unit...

Just an unknown media id or bad one? I use a Philips DVD+RW (on the recommended media list for NEC-1300A).
Robin.
