Is the c2scan as it exists for CDs also defined for DVDs? I'm trying to debug some DVD burner / media problems [1], and although it works fine for CDs, for DVDs I get an error per sector, even on new pressed DVDs.
SuSE 9.2 kernel 2.6.8, readcd 2.01. The errors are: readcd -c2scan dev=/dev/hdb Read speed: 1408 kB/s (CD 8x, DVD 1x). Write speed: 0 kB/s (CD 0x, DVD 0x). Capacity: 3931968 Blocks = 7863936 kBytes = 7679 MBytes = 8052 prMB Sectorsize: 2048 Bytes Copy from SCSI (0,1,0) disk to file '/dev/null' end: 3931968 readcd: Success. read_cd: scsi sendcmd: no error CDB: BE 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 31 FA 00 00 status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION) Sense Bytes: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 30 02 00 00 Sense Key: 0x5 Illegal Request, Segment 0 Sense Code: 0x30 Qual 0x02 (cannot read medium - incompatible format) Fru 0x0 Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid) resid: 129654 cmd finished after 0.002s timeout 40s readcd: Success. Cannot read source disk readcd: Retrying from sector 0. . readcd: Success. Error on sector 0 not corrected. Total of 1 errors. readcd: -noerror set, continuing ... . [and then for each block] readcd -c2scan dev=ATA:0,1,0 and readcd -c2scan dev=ATAPI:0,1,0 give the same result. No difference with a vanilla readcd 2.01. Remembering that Jrg doesn't like current kernels with some of this stuff, I bootet an old SuSE 8.2 kernel 2.4.20, readcd 2.0. Same errors, with both ATAPI: access and with running the drive with ide-scsi. Is it even theoretically possible to obtain information of how many errors are corrected on a DVD (and therefore some indication of how good the burn/media/etc are)? If so, am I doing something wrong with readcd, or is there any other Linux software to do it? Thanks for pointers, Volker [1] Verbatim DVD-R 8x burned in a Pioneer A106 produces coasters, truckloads of I/O errors reading in an Asus E616 dvdrom drive. Upgrading the Pioneer's firmware from 1.05 to 1.08 only gave marginal improvement. The Verbatim DVD-R 4x (all Verbatims up to 4x) never gave a problem before in this burner. -- Volker Kuhlmann is possibly list0570 with the domain in header http://volker.dnsalias.net/ Please do not CC list postings to me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
