I've tried using hdparm to view/adjust the settings on the drive (I used -c to up the mode to 32-bit...it was set at 16-bit...that seemed strange to me). That didn't really affect the outcome -- still getting coasters.
Are there any other options I could try?

If you did use cdrecord, you would get a readable error message ;-)

today, you cannot trust most Linux distributions anymore as many of them
spread the broken Debian speudo fork.....
If you like to get a working cdrecord, you need to feth it yourself and
compile it as people did 10 years ago.
