The original problem I posted was with growisofs. It was Joerg's (sorry about the ASCII mangling) suggestion to use cdrecord -- and then everyone got into the whole "which cdrecord" discussion. By the way, the ftp site provided by him was inaccessible to me. I was using DVD+Rs. Switching to DVD-Rs seems to have solved it.
