This is a bug _introduced_ by wodim! It never has been in the original cdrtools..... Note that recently, several Linux distributors did start to publish a defective and dead cdrtools fork. If you have problems on Linux installations from Debian, RedHat, Suse and similar, you always should first upgrade to recent original software that may be found here: http://cdrecord.berlios.de/ Also read http://cdrecord.berlios.de/old/private/linux-dist.html on the background for the problems with the Linux distributions.
