growisofs still does not write completely readable error messages :-( I recommend you to use cdrecord instead of growisofs. Cdrecord will tell the drive to do laser power calibration and it will print you a completely human readable error message in case it still fails. If cdrecord fails with the same problem, then your drive does not like the medium.
