Cdrecord (the original software) always gives error messages or at least warnings in case of problems. Cdrtools (the original software) contains a working "mkisofs" while some Linux distributions unfortunately publish a "fork" that is full of bugs. cdrecord -atip prints the media type cdrecord -minfo prints the current media status cdrecord -v -minfo prints both from above.
