Now that the national tournament season has come to an end, I want to
let folks know that UTEP's forensics GA position has reopened.
Invitation to apply for a GA /Graduate Teaching Assistantship in
Forensics, available Fall 2007, at The University of Texas at El Paso
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is still accepting
applicants for a Graduate Teaching Assistant to work with the UTEP
Forensics Program starting in Fall 2007. This is a two-year position
which provides a monthly income as you earn your M.A. in
Communication. No teaching is required during summer, but
opportunities for summer employment for extra money are available. A
tuition waiver for In-State tuition status comes with the GA
ship. Tuition at UTEP is significantly lower than at many other
colleges. Many cost of living expenses are lower in El Paso as well.
If you are interested in coming to far West Texas to earn your
Master's degree, please contact me to discuss the possibilities of
working with me (DOF) and our debate coach in coaching and traveling
with the UTEP Forensics Team. We are a small team (usually no more
than 15 competitors a semester), full of friendly and open-minded
folks, and we love forensics. We have a healthy and growing
budget. If you become our teaching and coaching assistant, your
ideas will be both welcome and respected, and you will have the
opportunity to train our students and help our program grow.
The UTEP Forensics team competes nationally in individual events and
parliamentary debate. Our students qualify for AFA-NIET and NFA
national competition consistently each year. We have an active Pi
Kappa Delta chapter, and compete in PKD national tournaments. We
are developing and strengthening our parliamentary debate
program. We are fortunate to have a decent budget for our team; this
year we were allocated $4000 to purchase laptops and other computer
items for team use, and our travel arrangements and schedules are
consistently both comfortable and wellness-oriented.
UTEP is located in El Paso, Texas, which is situated on the
international border between the US and Mexico, and is part of a
large bi-national and multicultural urban area. The sister cities of
El Paso and Juarez, Mexico are divided by the Rio Grande river, which
serves as an international boundary. Our campus is
Hispanic-dominant, and the UTEP Forensic Team is both multicultural
and diverse. You can actually see both Mexico and the state of New
Mexico from our campus! The cultural ambiente of the El Paso
southwest is warm and friendly This is a great place to learn
Spanish and eat fiery chile.

competed for Wilkes University and earned her credentials for the
AFA-NIET All American Team. She will be able to share with you some
of her perspectives on the GA position at UTEP.
