Dear Dr. Hunter,

you were very helpful in getting a CellML model by Dr. Friel here at CWRU straighened out. The particular model had been originally translated into CellML by the Auckland group and was in the depository. You initiated the events that lead Peter Villiger at your place to modify the model so that it would run properly. I do not know whether you heard about the end result, but it was very successful and we thank you for it.

My purpose today is to inquire whether there still is a group at Bioengineering at Auckland that translates mathematical models into CellML. A post-doc in my lab developed a model for sodium bicarbonate reabsorption by proximal tubule cells 10 years ago (Orosz DE, Hopfer U. Pathophysiological consequences of changes in the coupling ratio of Na,K-ATPase for renal sodium reabsorption and its implications for hypertension. Hypertension. 1996 Feb;27(2):219-27). The modeling was based on a C-based meta-language called SCoP (developed by Mailen Cootsey, http://www.simresinc.com). The interest to translate the model into CellML comes from international collaborations and a need to interprete the functional significance of biochemical changes (levels of transporters) in terms of overall transepithelial absorption rates, which are related to sodium homeostasis and hypertension. The advantage of CellML would be the transportability of the model between different labs.

If you could tell me whether there still is a group and interest in CellML at Auckland and, if so, could you put me in contact with them.

Sincerely,

--
