Cemetery Report: June 9, 2013 " Yummy Lichens" List user
7/6/2013, 2:42:12 PM Gee, I woke up 15 minutes before the alarm went off. First trip back to cemeteries since the ankle surgery, 5 weeks ago. Left the house at 4:13AM @ 57F/15C and I'm heading west, back to Albion, N.Y. to try and finish the large 100 acre City Cemetery on Rt. 31. I got to Tim's in Albion at 6:13AM and counted 19 deer on the way getting here. There are many pink coloured clouds in the sky now. But, at 5:15AM it was bright enough then, that I could have easily started in a cemetery with plenty of light. Got to the cemetery now from Tim's at 6:28AM and its 56F/14C. 1st thing I did was head right for the tower to see if I have any better luck this time............................well, you don't get any photos from me, from the top of this building, that's for sure. I didn't make it up there any farther this time than the last time. Course, now I started writing this a week after the day trip and it took me 5 days to get my legs back to normal and stop limping bad. Ole L. Skinner 1881-1954. Pardo A. Petroline 1905-2000. And here is a new feature for the Cemetery Reports. You'll just love this. Ever go into a cemetery and see all the fungus and lichens etc. growing on the headstones ? Well, now we will learn about that stuff. Doesn't that sound like fun boys and girls? One of the most noticeable kinds is the "mustard coloured" lichen. This is a " Sulphur Firedot" and there's 131 species of just this one kind. Its Latin name is "Caloplaca Flavovirescens" Oh Boy......isn't this excite ting stuff ? Oh, why does it grow on some headstones and not others, its the type of stone and the colour. If you happen to be in the market to buy a headstone keep this in mind, granite, marble etc. will attract and also reject certain types of lichens. From what I understand black marble is best at rejecting most kinds of lichens. (P) George A. Basinait 1866-1933. Thor Valentine 1892-1948 (P) Minnie C.
