Dear Ramon,
I would like to be proven wrong. I did not meet a single member of the
Center for Good Governance group at the December 6 De La Salle Advent
Recollection at the Our Lady of Star Chapel at the DLSU-Santiago Zobel campus.
There was not a single member either of other organizations/ batches to
whom I had extended an invitation to join us.
Non-attendees missed a rare opportunity to tour the Philip J. Lhuillier
Museum which houses a selection of rare religious Christian Antiquities. Philip
is HS. '64 and the incumbent Ambassador to Italy. His curator, Joseph Renta
(also a St. Benilde graduate), toured us. It was mind-boggling! I had kiddingly
declared to the PR staff that I was ready to levitate in the area of the
reliquaries. But, it was not to be! I will obviously have to do much more by
way of indulgence accumulation !
Non-attendees also missed talks, straight-from-the heart, of fellow
LaSallites: Br. Dennis Magbanua (President of DLSU-Zobel)and Br. Vic Franco
(President of the College of St. Benilde).
The main speaker was Fr. Francis Tiquia of the Oblate Apostles of the Two
Hearts. His field of specialization is exorcism and was trained in Rome to
polish his craft.
One of my HS. '58 classmates, George Rickard, texted me yesterday, "Was
about to text you that I attended today's affair just 4 u. Well thank u cuz I
liked d lecture, d company, and d museum trip. La Salle won against San Beda
and will meet Ateneo in the finals."
That compliment is the best early Christmas gift I have received for some
time. It was seconded by my other classmates, Prim de Guzman and Rod Salazar
(with his wife, Bong, a sister of Br. Benilde Feliciano).I would like to
believe that it was a sentiment which prevailed among all who attended the
event and shared of themselves.
If I mention it now, it is simply to stress the fact that organizations
are largely aggrupations of individuals. The organizational march is a march of
many individuals.
Br. Vic Franco had underscored education as the pressing need of the
Philippines: starting with the individuals to the families to organizations on
a values-laden platform.
Education was defined in its broad front and not boxed in by academic
parameters.
He did stress, however, that the Philippine population was largely bereft
of adequate academic education for the majority in terms of all
levels:elementary, secondary, and college...hence, the rationale and Christian
platform of the One La Salle Endowment Fund.
Br. Vic Franco invited all to visit him in his three campuses to learn
more of what they were doing for the communities they serviced. In so doing,
joint endeavors by the school with the rest of the Lasallian Community (which
includes alumni and their families)would be catalyzed.
Br. Dennis summarized the work of the Christian Brothers in the
Philippines (now all of 17 District Schools nationwide servicing a student
population estimated at 84,000 annually, predominantly college). There were
also the La Salle-supervised schools nationwide, now 30, estimated population
unstated.
He also made a direct call for a wider base volunteers to help them in
their mission of transforming communities into active Christian communities.
Fr. Tiquia laid bare the workings of Satan. In sum, he said that prayerful
individuals are less prone to succumbing to the insidious ways of the devil who
is constantly preying on all of us.
In sum, they all said a mouthful.
The underlying note, expressed in different levels of diplomatic language,
was that greed left large sectors of populations in extreme poverty and without
access to opportunities.
It is time that we act on their requests to lift this country and the
world out of its seemingly hopeless condition.
It is time that we re-examine our respective individual lives and
organizational programs.
An Advent Recollection event, among other spiritual endeavors, helps in
facilitating that process.
De La Salle U-Manila will be hosting a Christmas Eve Mass come December
24, 7-9 pm., at the main chapel. Many will recall that we had spent so many
moments of recollection at the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel. And perhaps, many
of us were also transformed as a result of those spiriitually energizing visits.
I will be there come December and I will bring non-LaSallites as well to
join me in sharing that gift of One La Salle !
It is time for unconditional alliances for the disadvantaged.
It is time to say thank you to all who have impacted on our lives.
In ending, let me say thank you to all again.
I am very grateful and proud of my heritage as a LaSallite, the gift of my
parents.
We all need to leave our own individual and organizational legacies as
LaSallites.
Let me now quote from a booklet on St. John Baptist de la Salle, "I
Journey With The Dream". I had secured many copies, truth tell, for
distribution to others, from the Pastoral Office of DLSU-Manila:
"As I look back over 40 years and the gigantic task I have undertaken and
brought to success, I smile at my early reluctance and the hesitation. I smiled
too at God's ways, how He guided me, one step at the time. Certainly, if I had
known the troubles and the pain I would have had to endure, I would not have
touched this work with a 40-foot pole !
The end approaches, my dream has come true for the many young people I
wanted to help and I pray the same for thousands more as yet unborn. I am at
peace. God be praised."
In friendship forever
Your brother, DE LA SALLE
Again, Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to all !
Tony
