By simply turning out all non-essential lighting for one hour at our homes, locations and facilities across the world, we will join hundreds of millions of concerned citizens and corporations throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations. In 2008, more than 50 million people in 400 cities around the world took part, as the lights dimmed at Sydney’s Opera House, Rome’s Coliseum and the Empire State Building. Even the Google homepage went dark for the day. In Israel, President Shimon Peres personally turned off lights in Tel Aviv. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative. Earth Hour 2010 will be even bigger. It is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. To get a better sense of the magnitude and inspiring nature of the event, please take a moment to watch WWF’s video about Earth Hour at http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=FclcMfzjwug To help us make sure the lights actually do go out at 8.30pm on March 27, we’d like to ask that all switch off office lights and unplug non-essential equipment before leaving their workplaces on Friday March 26, the day before Earth Hour. In addition, we’d like to encourage everyone to participate in Earth Hour by turning off their lights at home during the event. Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and absolutely free. For more information and to sign up visit www.earthhour. org where you’ll find fun tips for what you and your family and friends can do to show support. I invite all of you to share your ideas for ways that we can reduce our environmental footprint. We’re excited about Earth Hour and hope you are too. Don’t forget—March 27 at 8.30pm, switch off your lights and show the world what can be done. Fraternally, Br. Richie P.
