Hi all,
I was thinking about all the iconv stuff, the detection and all and I
was wondering... Do we really need to check if iconv is installed and
use all those conditional macros? Wouldn't it be simpler to just
require libiconv on the target system (which should be present
anyway)? Consider that glibc has libiconv embedded, so all Linux
flavours should have it by default. Other operating systems have
libraries which provide the same functionality and I could bet that
most of the modern systems have libiconv installed by default. Isn't
it a bit too much hassle to make all this conditional behaviour just
to support... what really? I'm pretty sure it's really hard to find a
system without libiconv, especially one that needs an IM client.
What do you think? Can we simplify our lives by requiring that the
users have libiconv installed on their systems?
