Not familiar with that error, but try specifying the number of devices:
# mdadm -C /dev/md2 -l1 -n2 /dev/sd[cd]1

Forgot to ask, does /dev/md2 exists in /dev?
If not, you can still use makedev to generate it:
# cd /dev
# MAKEDEV md
Undocumented, but it still works.
man mdadm
-a, --auto{=no,yes,md,mdp,part,p}{NN}
Instruct mdadm to create the device file if needed, possibly
allocating an unused minor number . . . . .
