I would suggest you start checking back through the changelogs between 
kernel-2.6.18-194.el5 and kernel-2.6.18-164.el5, find likely candidates 
that may have caused your issue and then rebuild a testing kernel with 
that patch reverted. If that testing kernel fixes your issue then you've 
identified the issue and can file a bug report upstream.

To start you on your way, this patch looks like a likely candidate for 
you to investigate further:

This does sound like a likely candidate - I'm not sure if I'm up to rebuilding a kernel, particularly on a laptop, however all my other desktops are x86_64 and I'm not sure if that creates more issues for doing a kernel rpm rebuild or not?
I need to do some reading and learning first - any particular place or howto that would help?
I've heard of mock and other rebuild environments but never taken the plunge as I can normally wait for things to arrive in due course when upstream decides its ready to support it e.g. firefox, openoffice thunderbird etc. Or make use of Dags repo or elrepo.
However regression is not something I can live with and unfortunately it seems to be becoming an issue.
Thanks for the suggestion, I may try the ordinary kernel first (i.e. not centosplus kernel, just to be safe).
