[CentOS] Error 2002 with MySQL on a new Centos 5.5 installation

With my new Centos installation, I get the following error when I 
type in

# mysql
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through 
socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I have Googled the error, but the results do not appear to be helpful
