I am amazed by the Somali situation. The blockade idea will never fly for multiple reasons, not the least of which is the fact that their coastline is the size of the US Eastern seaboard. But what about arming the merchant marine ships? Why not put some serious Blackwater type of armed detachments on each ship? It doesn't seem like it would be impossible to defend the ships with a reasonable amount of fighting capabilities. All crews were ready to fight in the days of Blackbeard. Unfortunately, we have to respond to the pirates today like they did in the pirate infested days of the tall ships. But with, so far anyway, little leadership from the White house and none from Congress, for that matter none from the Republican Party either, maybe this is the time for a word or two on the subject. As a modest suggestion, how about a blockade of all Somali ports, large and small ? No need to patrol a million square miles of ocean. At such time as there is a government in that looney bin of a country, with the ability to enforce basic criminal law, the blockage would be lifted In the meantime, any ship that tries to go to open waters would be sunk by warships. No need to worry about fishing. For all practical matters, there isn't any as it is, the Somalis have already so over-fished coastal waters that the local fishing industry has been destroyed. And while we are at it, how about military actions to free the 12 ships still in pirate hands and try to free over 100 hostages? Two nations that seem willing to actually do something along these lines and not just talk, are India and France, Together,the US , India, and France could handle the problem and everyone else can debate things all they want.and be complete wimps until hell freezes over if that is their desire, Completely fed up with the nonsense in Somalia Billy
