Consider the uses we make of our discussions. There isn't any formula here, but there is a practical dimension to the give and take. It is an opportunity to test ideas, to see what works, and to gain a sense of certainty that you are on the right track. That is, some of the most important uses are outside the group, among your friends, in real world political contexts, or in such things as "publishing" your ideas. Not necessarily in print, but on the web , if this is something you think you should do. What would be the point of never agreeing with others ? We want to find agreement --as much as possible -- since it confirms our ( presumed ) good sense. Still, sometimes agreement can't be found. OK, it isn't the end of the world. In that case the problem becomes, given our disagreements, how can we nonetheless get along with each other ? How can we respect our differences ? To be clinically honest, this is the difficult part of RC. And we aren't always all that successful. After the 2008 election it took months to regains a sense of normality, and there still are raw feelings. But at least there is a sense that we have come through the storm. And speaking for myself, a sense that even if my favored candidate had won, the outcome would not have been all that good, either. Essentially we need an alternative to what both the Democrats and Republicans have to offer. Either new ideas adopted by the major parties, or an new party addition to the major parties. We don't have that now --to state the obvious. This is a way to explore the kinds of ideas that offer a good alternative. And finally, even though it is through e-mails, friendships have developed over the years. So it all seems to me.
