A few years ago Ernie, on behalf of RC.com. awarded a prize for
something like "Radical Centrist of the Year." As far as I know,
even though the award did receive some press coverage, that was the
first and only such award bestowed.
Given the flap overt the Nobel Peace Prize, which it is safe to say
has tarnished the reputation of the NPP Committee, it seems to me
that maybe this would be a good time to think about an "RC of the
Year"
award and making it a permanent part of our deliberations. Something
intended
to give a needed boost to the concept of giving awards for
achievement.
This is Ernie's group, there ought to be a "Founder's Award" that
Ernie can
give to anyone he thinks deserves it. We all owe Ernie a debt of
gratitude for
this group, and for holding it together through thick and thin. The
Founder's Award
could be sub-titled almost anything, whatever Ernie might want.
But as a suggestion, how about a limited number of other awards to
give
recognition to people who have advanced the RC cause, or whose ideas
clearly are in the RC spirit ? Something we could all participate in.
With luck, these wards just might give us some recognition in the
media,
which would be a Big Plus for the group. This might best be done in
December,
maybe the same week as Time Magazine gives out its Person of the
Year award.
Take advantage of the association which might be seen in the two
"events."
Anyway, this is just a suggestion , but as an idea I think it has
merit
whatever date might be selected.
For example, there could be an RC "Man of the Year" AND
a "Woman of the Year" award , in addition to a Founder's Award for,
let us say, the political figure who has done the most to advance RC
ideas,
or perhaps to recognize a foreign leader who has been most sympatico
with the values of the group, again, whatever Ernie thinks is best.
But the group as a whole might make nominations for the Man and
Woman awards
and then vote to determine the winners. Anyone could vote who has been
more-or-less a "regular" at this forum.
There could be, like the Oscars, special awards. Mark Satin, for
example,
sometimes highlights legislation that, in his opinion, exemplifies
RC ideas.
We could do something similar. Or maybe give recognition to a movie
that, as we see it, reflects one or more important RC principles.
Anyway,
this is for future consideration. For now, it might be best simply
to focus on RC Man and Woman of the Year selections.
Any comments ?
This is something we could do and have some fun at doing, with
potential for recognition down the road.
