Ernie: Its not just me who can be curmudgeonly. :-) But, yeah, there was a sort of tacky quality to Hume's " preachment " I still admire Mr Hume, but what he said has the earmarks of someone who is trying his wings, as it were, as an evangelizing Christian believer. Years and years as a news analyst, never able to openly express his inner soul adequately. It takes time to learn how to do this in a good way on a consistent basis. Don't ask me how I know, I just do, learned it the hard way. And even then I still screw up every so often. The only thing that really disturbs me is the ( unintended ) belittling of Buddhism. Maybe it is true that Christian faith offers a superior opening to redemption when forgiveness is most needed, my feeling is that it does, but the question concerns "the whole package," if you will. Would Woods be better off --all respects-- by converting to Christian faith or better off by returning to his Buddhist roots and, maybe for the first time in 20 years, really trying to live like an actual Buddhist seeking not only forgiveness in some form, but the deepest possible understanding of what he has done and what he now must do in order to repair the damages and start life again ? As someone who feels strongly about both the value and truth of Christian faith as well as Buddhism, I really don't have a good answer.
